Smart Medical Queue & Booking System

A UX-focused self-initiative aimed at transforming patient experiences through simplified appointment scheduling, real-time queue updates, and seamless facility navigation. My first deep-dive into end-to-end UX research for the medical industry.

What is MedUP Medical System?

I designed MedUP as a side project to explore how a medical app can enhance user experience, with a focus on patient needs, in the healthcare field. Created to simplify healthcare management and monitoring, this is just the first phase of the project, with many plans for expanding its features in the future.

MedUP offers a range of functionalities, including easy appointment booking, locating nearby facilities, real-time queue traffic analysis, medication profile management, and more. For starter I designed a low fidelity design of the product that can be shown under here:

Start with sketching and drawing

In this low-fidelity design, I created a simple appointment booking flow that takes just 5 steps, including the confirmation step. The flow is straightforward, easy to learn, and user-friendly. I have also integrated real-time queue traffic information for each medical facility, allowing users to see which locations are crowded and choose an alternative.

User Scenario and Pain Points

This design is an upgraded version of the existing application, aimed at providing significant improvements that benefit both patients and medical staff. By reducing conflicts and frustration, it enhances service quality and planning for all involved. I am confident that this application can be seamlessly integrated with the existing queue systems in medical facilities.

Key Points and Takeaway

User's pain points:

1. Wake up early to avoid rush
2. Heavy traffic and no parking at facility
3. Packed facilities with a lot of patients already queueing
4. Queueing for treatment and prescriptions

Solutions:

1. Easy booking appointments that can see which facilities are packed

2. Estimate time arrival (ETA) from medical facilities from user's home

3. Easy QR code implementation to see queue traffics and store medical information

Based on this user pain points and analysis, I can conclude that the upgraded application effectively addresses key challenges faced by both patients and medical staff.

By streamlining appointment booking, real-time queue updates, and remote registration, it reduces wait times, minimizes frustration, and enhances the overall patient experience.

For medical staff, the app improves efficiency by automating administrative tasks and optimizing resource allocation, resulting in smoother operations and better patient care. The app’s accessibility and convenience make it a valuable tool for improving healthcare delivery.

Design Breakdown - Homepage

This homepage design focuses on four key elements: Functionalities (such as booking appointments, locating facilities, and contacting emergency services), Upcoming Visits (to provide reminders to users), Service Options (for quick access to information), and News/Media (for general knowledge). This compact layout ensures users can easily navigate between different sections and access the information and features they need effortlessly.

Design Breakdown - Appointment & Services

The Appointment Booking design in MedUP is straightforward, offering users two options: to book for themselves or on behalf of someone else (such as a parent, spouse, or child). This flexibility allows users to manage healthcare appointments easily. Additionally, users can view their past medication history and visit records, helping them track their own healthcare more effectively.

The Services Options feature allows users to identify which services best match their current health needs, such as inpatient care (surgical, pediatric, and intensive care), outpatient services for routine check-ups, specialist consultations, diagnostic imaging, lab tests, and more. This section acts as a filter when choosing a location, ensuring users select a facility that offers the specific services they require.

Design Breakdown - Facility and TimeSlot

The Facility List is generated based on the user's current location (with location services enabled), allowing them to view nearby medical facilities that offer the selected services. This list provides insights into each facility's current queue traffic, enabling users to compare and choose the one with the shortest wait times. This feature offers added benefits for users in planning their visits efficiently.

The Slots and Times feature displays only the available dates and times from the selected facilities. This provides users with greater flexibility and enhances their experience by allowing them to better plan their travel journey to the medical facilities.

Design Breakdown - Confirmation and QR Code

After booking, users can review and confirm the details on a confirmation page to efficiently generate the necessary documentation. QR codes simplify gathering patient information, such as name, location, date, and time. After scanning, users can review and confirm the details on a confirmation page to efficiently generate the necessary documentation. This approach ensures accuracy and convenience for both patients and healthcare providers.
